At just 21 years old, shortly after completing her final year of university, Lucy’s life took an unexpected turn. A serious motorbike accident left her paralysed from the chest down (T4 vertebrae), altering her future in an instant. What could have been the end of her athletic ambitions became the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter—one defined by resilience, determination, and a refusal to be limited by circumstance.
During her rehabilitation, Lucy was introduced to wheelchair tennis after meeting Paralympic Quad Wheelchair Legend Pete Norfolk. Inspired by his achievements and encouragement, she picked up a racket for the first time and quickly fell in love with the sport. What began as a new challenge soon became a driving passion, setting Lucy on a path to compete at the highest levels of international wheelchair tennis.
In 2008, just a few years after discovering the sport, Lucy qualified for her first Paralympic Games in Beijing. Representing Great Britain on the world stage was a defining moment and one that affirmed her place among the sport’s elite. Competing against the best in the world, Lucy realised she not only belonged there, but had the potential to go even further. It was the moment her Paralympic dream truly took flight.
Competing at a home Paralympics in London 2012 was a dream come true, but it became even more special when Lucy, alongside Jordanne Whiley, made history by winning Great Britain’s first-ever women’s wheelchair tennis medal. The pair secured bronze in the women’s doubles in front of a passionate home crowd. It was a career-defining achievement and a groundbreaking moment for British women’s wheelchair tennis.
Following their historic achievement in London, Lucy and Jordanne returned to the Paralympic stage in Rio 2016 with determination and experience. The duo once again fought hard to claim the bronze medal in the women’s doubles, proving their consistency and resilience at the highest level of competition.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games—delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and held without supporters in the stands—Lucy and Jordanne reached a historic milestone by making it all the way to the women’s doubles final. Despite the unique challenges of competing in such an unusual environment, their incredible journey culminated in winning a silver medal, the highest Paralympic achievement of any British Women’s wheelchair tennis player to date.
Beyond her Paralympic success, Lucy has built an impressive and sustained career on the international tennis circuit. She has reached multiple Grand Slam finals and consistently competed against the world’s best. Her dedication and performance have seen her achieve a career-high singles ranking of World No.5 and career-high doubles ranking of World No.3. These milestones reflect not only her skill and resilience, but also her deep commitment to continually raising the bar.
In 2024, Lucy was proudly named as female flag bearer for ParalympicsGB at the Paris Paralympic Games, alongside Terry Bywater. A prestigious honour recognising her outstanding achievements, leadership, and dedication to the sport. Carrying the flag symbolised not only her personal journey but also her role as an inspiration and ambassador for disability sport across Great Britain.
Beyond her achievements on the court, Lucy is a passionate advocate for disability sport and a dedicated supporter of the next generation. As an athlete mentor with the Youth Sport Trust, she helps young people build confidence and resilience through the power of sport. In her role as a trustee for Bright Ideas for Tennis, Lucy works to make tennis more inclusive and accessible, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities at every level of the game.
Lucy’s influence extends far beyond the court. As Chair of the ITF Player Council for six years, she represented the voices of wheelchair tennis athletes worldwide, helping shape the future of the sport at the highest level. Today, she continues to lead through public speaking, mentoring, and sharing her powerful story. A strong believer in the transformative power of sport, Lucy uses her journey to inspire others to embrace challenges, defy limits, and strive to be the best version of themselves.
“I have worked with Lucy on two separate occasions, with two very different audiences. The first event was for Lesbian Visibility Week, Lucy captured the hearts of so many people that day, sharing her story and how she had turned one of the biggest challenges anyone can face into a positive. She showed that anything is possible with the right mindset. I know from that event, that she has gained many more followers and supporters. When I had the opportunity to invite Lucy to an event very dear to me, within the mortgage intermediary business, Lucy once again captured the audience. So many of the guests spoke to me after, totally amazed and in awe of her story. Lucy has shown that through determination and the love of her family and friends supporting her, you can achieve anything.” Barclays
“Lucy’s story was amazing and inspirational. Her description of playing at the London Paralympics and the feeling she had playing to sold out stadiums, made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck just listening to her and only imagining the feeling and delight that she must have felt to become a Paralympic medal winner. She has gone on to achieve over 100 International career titles including World Doubles Champion, four-time Wimbledon Doubles finalist and Multiple World Team Cup Medallist.” JP Morgan
“Great storytelling by Lucy and an amazing and inspiring story on how to respond to adversity in life.” Airbnb Experience
