Ruth Amos, age 27, is an award winning Inventor, Entrepreneur and Maker of Things. Ruth started inventing whilst still at school and during her GCSE project created ‘The Stairsteady’ (a mobility device) which is sold internationally. Winner of Young Engineer for Britain in 2006, Ruth works on a variety of creative engineering projects and designs and builds crazy contraptions; from a flame-throwing piano to a superhero suit that fires custard. Ruth Amos, age 27, is an Inventor, Entrepreneur and Edutuber. Managing Director of Stairsteady and co-founder of the #girlswithdrills movement, Ruth is regularly in demand as an inspirational and motivational public speaker.
After designing the StairSteady as part of her GCSE Resistant Materials Course, Ruth established StairSteady Ltd in 2006, she then went on to win Young Engineer for Britain with her design. The StairSteady is a mobility device to maintain independence and safety on the stairs. Following the product’s success, she took StairSteady to market in 2008, it is now available through a network of Dealers in the UK, Canada, USA and parts of Europe.
Ruth and her fellow inventor and EdutuberShawn run a Youtube Channel ‘Kids Invent Stuff’ where they set kids a monthly challenge to invent things. Ruth and Shawn build and test the childrens’ inventions on camera and each week they release a new video aiming to inspire and engage young people in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). To inspire young people further, Ruth has recently jointly launched an inclusivity campaign #Girlswithdrills, a project to help young people in disadvantaged areas to use their practical skills to create, build or engineer something.
Ruth is a specialist on the Future of Business, curating Nesta’s Futurefest ‘Future of Work’ theme in 2016. In her speech “The Future of Business”, Ruth raises fascinating points about Artificial Intelligence, implants and asks what the career trajectories are for Generation Z and beyond. She highlights interesting questions about advancing technology and the knock on effect on the education system, after all, she questions, how can we educate the next generation for a virtually unknown future world of work? She discusses ‘Click revenue’ or earning through likes, shares and watches – a market she believes will get bigger and bolder as an industry.
