David Murdoch

David Murdoch – 3 x Time Team GB Winter Olympian, Sochi Silver medal winner. 

David Murdoch is a curler from Lockerbie, 3 x Winter Olympian and Scohi Winter Olympic 2014 silver medallist, His 12 sensational curling matches as skip of the Team GB men at the Sochi Olympics saw his last stones win crucial games to famously include a vital play off against Norway in which his shot was dubbed by national press as ‘shot of the century’ to make the semi finals and then an equally brilliant last shot against Sweden to secure a silver medal and Olympic final place. The win was the first for Team GB mens curling since the 1924 games. Curling coverage at Sochi was seen for 30 hours and was officially the most talked about sport on social media. 

David is a 2 x World Champion, 3 x European Champion, with 4th and 5th places in his first 2 Olympics. Curling is in his family heritage, his mum and dad, brother and sister all playing the game to a high level. David’s dad a 3 x national curling champion sadly died just 12 days after David’s triumphant return from Sochi, a journey his dad had supported him on his whole life. David and his dad also witnessed the tragic Lockerbie bombing in 1988, they were in a car just a few roads away when Pan AM flight 103 crashed, David has vivid recollections of the tragic day in his home town’s history. David is a recently married family man and full time professional athlete.  

David has commentated and taken part in studio analysis on curling for Eurosport for many years and Channel 4 for the 2014 paralympics. He has appeared recently on many TV & Radio shows including: A Question of Sport, Eggheads, Sport Relief 2014, Daybreak, The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Sky Sports, Sky 1’s Game Changers, BT Sport’s Panel with Tim Lovejoy and Matt Dawson, BBC Radio 2 with Anneka Rice, BBC 5live, Talksport. As a lottery funded athlete, he has also had the pleasure to officially release the National Lottery draw to 10 million viewers.  

David is a globally travelled sportsman regularly visiting Canada, USA, Switzerland, Germany and Scandinavia in all countries he is seen on national TV. He is a full time professional athlete, a proud, humble, dedicated pro and is widely acknowledged as one of the worlds top curlers. He is a brilliant speaker on his life and sports career.

EARLY CAREER:
David was born in Lockerbie in 1978 and took up the traditional sport of curling as a youngster playing with his family. His family all were talented curlers, his brother Neil is a former European Champion and his sister Nancy is an Olympic curling coach. As a youngster he witnessed the tragic aftermath of the Lockerbie bombing.
David won his first title as World Junior Champion in 1995, he retained that title in 1996 but had to settle for silver in 1998.By 1999, Murdoch had moved up to the position of skip, and led Scotland to a 6-3 record and fifth place at that year’s world juniors. Four years later, he led Scotland to the European Championship title, beating Peja Lindholm’s formidable Sweden team in the final.
2005-2008, WORLD & EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS, OLYMPICS FOURTH PLACE
In 2005, Murdoch went to his first ever World Championships. At the 2005 World Men’s Curling Championship his Scotland rink won the silver medal after losing to Canada’s Randy Ferbey in the final. The team’s fine run of form ensured all four members a place in the Great Britain men’s squad for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, with Murdoch was the youngest member of the quartet and also the skip. At the Olympics, Murdoch and his team lost in the bronze medal match to Pete Fenson of the United States and finished fourth.
Two months later, Murdoch would avenge his defeat in 2005 by winning the gold medal at the 2006 World Men’s Curling Championship. Murdoch defeated Canada (skipped by Jean-Michel Ménard) in the final. In December 2006 he won the silver medal in the European Championships in Basel, Switzerland, and followed that up with gold in 2007. He successfully defended his title at the European Curling Championships 2008 against Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud. Murdoch and his team represented Scotland again at the 2008 World Men’s Curling Championship, where he lost to Canada in the final.
2009-2012, WORLD CHAMPION AGAIN, NATIONAL SUCCESS, OLYMPICS FIFTH PLACE
In 2009, Murdoch once again won a gold medal for Scotland at the World Men’s Curling Championship, which was held in Moncton, Nebraska. On January 17, 2010, Murdoch’s rink became the first non-Canadian team to win the TSN Skins Game. His team won $70,500 (â’��43,000) for the win.
David Murdoch represented Team GB at his second Olympic Games at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. He also skipped the team for his second consecutive Games. The mens curling team placed fifth after losing their play off match to Sweden. After the 2009-10 season, Murdoch’s Olympic team broke up.
In 2011 David joined the successful ‘Team Brewster’ working with Tom Brewster (2xScottish Men’s Champion, 2xWorld Silver Medalist, 2x European Mixed Champion, World Junior Champion), Greg Drummon (2x Scottish Men’s Champion, 2x World Silver Medalist, University Games participant), Scott Andrews (2xScottish Men’s Champion, 2xWorld Silver Medalist, 2xScottish Junior Champion, World Junior Silver Medalist) and Michael Goodfellow (2xScottish Men’s Champion, 2xWorld Silver Medalist, 2x University Games participant ).The rest of his team mates are also available to accompany David at events.
2012/13 SEASON AND BEYOND…
The team completed a superb 2012/13 season in May 2013; with wins in the Scottish Championships, Hamburg Masters and Edinburgh Invitational. They also finished well in the European Championships and ended the season with a bronze at the World Championships in Canada. They ended the season joint 1st in the world.
Their 2013/14 season to date has gone well with bronze at the European Championships and many other tournament wins and good results. In January 2014 David went to curlings famous continental cup (the Ryder Cup of the sport) in Las Vegas narrowly losing in a strong showing from the Europeans.
Their seasons results confirming the team’s selection to represent Team GB as the chosen men’s curling team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. They played a fabulous tournament and won the Silver medal, the first by a Team GB team in mens curling for 90 years.
