One of the country’s most respected financial journalists and commentators Hamish McRae is an associate editor of The Independent. He was named Business and Finance Journalist of the Year 2006 at the British Press Awards. His latest book What Works was published in 2010.
Hamish is regarded as one of the most original commentators on economics and he is renown for making complicated subjects accessible to the public. Hamish has received several awards for his financial journalism.

Hamish McRae is an experienced journalist in economic affairs. Hamish has been paid the considerable compliment of being well known for communicating complicated economic subjects in an accessible way to the non-specialist.
Hamish is the author of a well-reviewed book about the future: ‘The World in 2020: Power, Culture and Prosperity’. This book was first published in 1994 and it has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Hamish read economics and political science at Trinity College, Dublin. He was editor of ‘Euromoney’ and financial editor of The Guardian before moving to The Independent as business and finance editor in 1989, where he is now also associate editor.
Hamish is also a frequent radio broadcaster. Awards include Financial Journalist of the Year in 1979, a special merit award in the first Amex Bank Essay Awards in 1987, and also Business Columnist of the year in 1996 (Periodical Publishers Association Awards). Hamish is a regular columnist for Fortune Magazine and a visiting professor at UMIST (Manchester)
