After leaving school at 18 Gavin joined the Metropolitan Police where he learnt the importance of body language and the power of communication and talked himself out of several sticky situations. Once he realised the Police wasn’t for him, he tried everything from studying for a law degree to reflexology and even greeting card writing in search of his passion.
Realising that he was skilled to do very little apart from work with people, Gavin decided to try out sales. He became a European sales award winner in his first full year selling, he was quickly promoted to team leader and then to sales manager before being headhunted to set up the sales division of a start-up organisation.
In his next role, he was Head of Sales & Marketing, looking after three divisions and managing many blue-chip clients for a FTSE 250. During this time he studied extensively in sales, motivation, communication and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). It was through this study and working in these roles that he began to realise the power of the individual over external events and circumstances and where he started to develop the mental toughness techniques, strategies and approaches that he shares in his motivational keynote talks and books today.
In 2001, inspired by a lifelong passion for self-improvement and success thinking, Gavin decided to set up his own business as a speaker, author and coach. Gavin’s keynote talks draw very much on his own life and career experience. Telling his back story – whether that is about how he did at school, closed his first deal, got his first promotion, or finally won the battle to lose weight and improve his health, helps audiences to engage with and relate to him. He believes everyone has their own personal battles to fight. The motivation to fight them comes from hearing how others have won theirs and telling your own stories to build an emotional connection with the people you want to influence.
Gavin has given over 1,000 paid talks to over 100,000 delegates, spoken in nearly every county in England, all over Europe and in the US and Africa, and has appeared on US TV networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox on the Brian Tracy TV Show. He is a judge for the British Excellence in Sales and Marketing Awards (BESMA) and has spoken three times at the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management’s (ISMM) conference. Gavin has worked with clients from small SMEs to the likes of UBS, The Royal Bank of Canada, Microsoft and Renault Trucks.
