Barry Cryer can’t help seeing the funny side of life. His quick-witted humour has won him many fans in television and on the speaking circuit.
Barry was born in Leeds where he was educated and he has the distinction of failing his undergraduate degree in English Literature at Leeds University. Barry argues his failure was due to the outbreak of World War II, which although was sixteen years earlier upset him very deeply. Nevertheless talent won, and he has become one of our best-loved and best known comedy script writers.
He thanks his lucky stars that following university, he was offered a week’s work at the famous City Varieties Theatre, home of the ‘Good Old Days’, the longest running television light entertainment show in the world. His career took off following an appearance in Expresso Bongo, a musical savaging of the pop music scene of the day, starring Paul Schofield, Millicent Martin and Susan Hampshire. It was during this period, he started making records and had the rare distinction of being Number One in Finland. He believes that this may have had something to do with the fact that they gave away a car with each record.
After this, he commenced writing for revues at the Fortune theatre, home of ‘Beyond the Fringe’. This led to writing and appearing in a night club show for Danny la Rue, an association that was to last for thirteen years. While still working with Danny, he met David Frost who invited him to join the writing roster on the BBC programme, the Frost Report – an amazing group of writers who included what was to become the whole of Monty Python team, the notorious and very funny Marty Feldman and David Nobbs, author of Reginald Perrin series and his future writing partner.
One show, ‘Frost over England’ won the Golden Rose at the Montreux Festival. Barry has also been associated with Silver and Bronze award shows at the Festival.
A very talented comedian and writer who is a favourite among clients requiring an entertaining witty speaker.
